The Snowy Range Mountains of southern Wyoming are
part of the Medicine Bow Mountains in the
Colorado-Wyoming Rocky Mountains. This area rests
along the counties of Albany and Carbon in Wyoming
and the counties of Larimer and Jackson in
Colorado. The Snowy Range sits west of the city of
Laramie and the Laramie River. The tallest mountain
of the Wyoming Snowy Range is Medicine Bow Peak
that is at an elevation of 12,013 feet above sea
level. The largest mountain of the entire range is
Clark Peak in the northern part of Colorado. It is
part of the Rawah Wilderness Area. The small town
of Centennial, Wyoming is nestled at the base of
the Snowy Range in Wyoming. Centennial has a
population between 100 and 200 people and is built
at an elevation of 8,075 feet. Wyoming State
Highway 130, passing through the middle of
Centennial, is the gateway to the Snowy Range Ski
Area and outdoor recreational opportunities in the
Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest of hiking,
cross-country skiing, mountain biking, snowmobile
trails, camping, and fishing. Highway 130 is closed
before the summit pass during the winter. The end
of the road turnaround for the winter season is a
popular takeoff point for snowmobile adventurers.
The ski resort is about twenty-five miles from the
city of Laramie and seventy-five miles from
Cheyenne,
Wyoming. Centennial is the last place, before
heading up into the Snowy Range, for food and
lodging. The NiCi Self Historical Museum is a
prominent feature of the town. Many of its
artifacts are displayed in the 1907 Hahn’s Peak
and Pacific Railroad Depot. The NiCi Museum is
open from June until Labor Day. It is usually
open for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in
the afternoons. The tour is free to the public,
but voluntary donations for the museum are
accepted. The NiCi Self Historical Museum is
located at 2734 State Highway 130. Because of
the spectacular backdrop of the Snowy Range
Mountains nearby, the mountains are often
depicted by the city of Laramie in their city
symbol.
